A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Chester County Election Department in Pennsylvania on February 5, 2025. The request was made by us at Central Chester Today, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability, we sought records under the Pennsylvania Right to Know Law, specifically asking for a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. The information requested includes the candidates' first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; party affiliation; as well as their contact information such as address, phone number, and email address.
As members of the media committed to delivering accurate news to our readership, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
We believe that as media professionals engaged in disseminating information to the public, we should be eligible for a fee waiver. We await a response from the Chester County Election Department regarding this matter.
