WASHINGTON, D.C.— A resounding majority of 212 Republicans and 198 Democrats voted to pass Rep. Susan Wild’s bill, H.R. 1149 the Countering Untrusted Telecommunications Abroad Act. This bipartisan bill would investigate and respond to security vulnerabilities caused by Chinese telecommunications companies in U.S. embassies overseas and among U.S. collective defense allies.
“I am proud that my bill to stand up to Chinese telecoms giants and protect our national and economic security was passed with such broad bipartisan support,” said Rep. Wild. “For far too long, the world has stood by as Chinese telecoms giants operated as vehicles for the Chinese Communist Party to commit horrific human rights violations against the Uyghur people, conduct mass surveillance and espionage, and supply technology to other repressive regimes around the world. Today, Congress sent a clear message that it would be tolerated no longer.”
Rep. Wild was joined in leading this bill by Delegate Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-American Samoa), which takes critical steps to secure telecommunications infrastructure by requiring the State Department to report on U.S. collective defense allies using untrusted telecommunication equipment or services in their 5G networks; mandating a report on telecommunications vulnerabilities in U.S. embassies overseas; and directing the Secretary of State to identify key telecommunications infrastructure projects designed to promote U.S. national security.
