Repair Café comes to Downingtown
What do you do with a lamp that does not work, or with a bike when the wheel runs out of true, or with a garment that needs mending? Toss it? No way! Repair Café Downingtown is organizing the first Repair Café in the area to be held at the Central Presbyterian Church, 100 West Uwchlan Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335 on Saturday, January 14, 2023.
At the Repair Café everything is about making repairs and reducing waste sent to landfills. Starting at 10:00 AM and ending at 2:00 PM various volunteer repair experts (Repair Coaches) will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. Visitors can either bring their own repair materials or reimburse the Repair Coaches for new materials such as bike parts, lamp parts, plugs, switches and wire (sold at cost). People visiting the Repair Café will bring their broken but treasured items from home, toasters, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, bikes, toys, ... anything that is broken is welcome. They can more than likely be repaired; the Repair Coaches almost always have the know-how.
According to Bob Berkowitz, organizer of the Repair Café, “many items requiring minor repairs are just thrown away”. By promoting repairing instead of trashing, Repair Café Downingtown wants to help reduce “MOUNTAINS OF WASTE”.
Bob also points out that repairs can save money, resources and can help minimize CO2 emissions. “Above all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be and how easy it often is.”
Repair Café Downingtown will hold its first Repair Café on Jan. 14, 2023 and it will hold subsequent Repair Cafes on March 11, May 13, July 8, Sept. 9 and Nov. 11, in 2023. The Repair Café will be held at the Central Presbyterian Church, 100 West Uwchlan Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335, from 10 AM to 2 PM.
