DASD celebrates Indian Heritage

Throughout the month of November, Downingtown Area School District (DASD) students and staff were treated to a smorgasbord of activities and events celebrating the unique culture and traditions of India.

While the United States does not officially recognize Indian Heritage Month, the US Census reports that Upper Uwchlan Township is home to the highest percentage of individuals of Asian descent in all of Pennsylvania.

Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Justin Brown states, “In DASD, 17% of the student population is of Asian descent. Events like these help us to better understand our friends and neighbors, and promote a sense of belonging in our schools.”

Now in its second year, Indian Heritage Month allows students and staff to experience Indian dance, yoga, food, song, clothing, language and more. The event is coordinated by parent, student and community volunteers who, this year alone, donated more than 50 hours and $10,000 to support the celebration.
